The male whale hypothesis is quite compelling for me, especially when you consider the mating behaviour of right whales and bowhead whales. Instead of competing through fighting or display, these males compete with one another through sperm competition - basically a whale orgy where the individual who produce the most sperm is most likely to sire the offspring. These are often chaotic affairs. Simultaneous copulation between two males and a female has been observed. Homosexual behaviour among males are also common as practice and play behaviour. These animals also have perhaps the largest penises of the animal kingdom, reaching 4m long. Their testicles weigh 2% of their body weight, meaning that it can weigh well over a ton. For comparison, the blue whale usually have a penis about 2.5-3m long, and their testicles are 1/10 of that of the right whale. TLDR: Right whales and bowhead whales are basically supercharged sea bonobos, and their huge penises during a chaotic mating session can be easily mistaken for sea serpents.

Caddy: No recognition to the name. Appearance: I know that one! It's a giant sea snake from around Washington state to Alaska area, it showed up in a Donald Duck comic book called "No Such Varmint" from 1948. Carl Barks usually based his stories from the National Geographic, I guess the varmint in question was sourced from more local outlets Amusing, Barks reused that design for his version of the Loch Ness Monster.

apparently primate vision is very good at spotting snakes (probably a survival adapatateion) this could this could be why random phenomena is often described as "snake like".
